Interannual variability in the Southern Ocean from an ocean modelforced by European Centre for Medium { Range Weather

چکیده
Anomaly patterns in the Southern Ocean in response to variability in the atmospheric forcing are investigated. To this end we forced the Hamburg large-scale geostrophic ocean general circulation model with surface uxes from the European Centre for Medium{Range Weather Forecasts reanalysis (ERA). ERA covers the period January 1979 through February 1994. First, the atmospheric variability of sea level pressure and the associated wind stress anomalies within the ERA data set are analyzed. An Antarctic Circumpolar Wave type pattern is identiied. In the ocean response, sea water temperature and salinity anomalies are found to vary with similar periods. The anomalies advect with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. High amplitudes occur in the southeast Indian and Paciic Oceans. Sensitivity studies are made, pinning down wind stress and heat ux as the dominant factors generating these anomalies. The oceanic interannual variations are explained in terms of enhanced oceanic convection resulting from anomalous Ekman pumping and anomalous heat uxes, both operating in a standing pattern dominated by wavenumbers 2 and 3. 2

A Reanalysis of Ocean Climate Using Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA)
This paper describes the Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA) reanalysis of ocean climate variability. In the assimilation, a model forecast produced by an ocean general circulation model with an average resolution of 0.25° 0.4° 40 levels is continuously corrected by contemporaneous observations with corrections estimated every 10 days. The basic reanalysis, SODA 1.4.2, spans the 44-yr period ...
متن کاملSatellite-based midlatitude cyclone statistics over the Southern Ocean: 2. Tracks and surface fluxes
[1] Midlatitude cyclone tracks over the Southern Ocean are constructed for the 1999–2006 period using two surface data sets: European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) sea-level pressure analyses on one hand, and on the other hand modified analyses in which high-wavenumber pressure variability derived from scatterometer swaths has been injected with a wavelet-based method. A com...
متن کاملSpatial and Temporal Variability of Antarctic Precipitation from Atmospheric Methods
The spatial and temporal variability of net precipitation (precipitation minus evaporation/sublimation) for Antarctica derived from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts operational analyses via the atmospheric moisture budget is assessed in comparison to a variety of glaciological and meteorological observations and datasets. For the 11-yr period 1985–95, the average continent...
متن کاملA review of the temporal and spatial variability of Arctic and Antarctic atmospheric circulation based upon ERA-40
A survey of the spatial and temporal behavior of the atmospheric general circulation as it relates to both polar regions is presented. The review is based on the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) 40-year reanalysis (ERA-40), updated using ECMWF operational analyses. The analysis spans 1960–2005 in the Northern Hemisphere, but is restricted to 1979–2005 in the Southern H...
متن کاملRecent trends in the Southern Ocean eddy field
Eddies in the Southern Ocean act to moderate the response of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) to changes in forcing. An updated analysis of the Southern Ocean satellite altimetry record indicates an increase in eddy kinetic energy (EKE) in recent decades, contemporaneous with a probable decrease in ACC transport. The EKE trend is largest in the Pacific (14.96 4.1 cm s per decade) and Ind...
